I recently invented what I shall call “The Hold Steady Drinking Game” although in reality it doesn’t actually require alcohol to be fun. The idea came about while I was walking around Montreal with Elisabeth and Abby and was challenged to make up a Hold Steady song on the spot. I thought about it for a while and realized there are several basic rules, that if you follow, you can create a pretty Craig Finn sounding narrative. Utilizing these rules, and some bonus ones, I figured out a game in which the players pick from various piles of paper and have to use their material to improv a Hold Steady song. Like a said does not require drinking, but it sure could help.

So Everyone takes a bunch of scraps of paper and writes down on each 1) a second tier american city (not NY, LA, etc….) 2) A character nickname which is based on or contains at least one noun (Freddy Knuckles) 3) A drug 4) A line to be repeated twice 5) a biblical reference or saint’s name.

 Then you make five piles and each person grabs one from each pile and goes at it.  If you have someone that can play a Springsteinian Riff on repeat all the better.  Then at the end everyone votes on their favorite.  Here’s a simulation of one (in which I will stack the deck, but base it on my aforementioned Montreal one).  Let’s say I pulled 1) Detroit 2) The Chipper, 3) Angel Dust, 4) This is the part of the song where I repeat myself 5) Christians being thrown to the lions.

I was watching an amazingly bad B movie the other night on Hulu entitled At The Earths Core. Hulu is an excellent resource for both good television and the most random selection of movies since Night Flight. The premise is pretty much implied by the title. Two Victorian Era scientists make a big drill and travel to the center of the earth where they discover a primitive civilization ruled by rejects from the planet of the Apes. Also there are giant bird/dinosaur hybrid creatures left over from some Godzilla movie and inserted with truly awful blue screen. I think they might have telepathy and consort with the apeish men. The film starred the fine thespian Doug McClure, one of the namesakes of the Simpson’s Troy McClure. The special effects, especially the poor blue screen and costumes, made me think the film was from the late 50s or 60s. I was amazed to find it was filmed in 1976. This misperception of ten to fifteen years is not that out of the ordinary given the relative slow progression amongst low budget movies (which only recently look different as a result of widespread and cheaper computer technology). But it got me thinking, at some point in the future someone will mistakenly see this movie and out of ignorance think “Hey, was this filmed during the Victorian times.” And then in a historically short period of time after that many people may make the same mistake, until only experts know that the film couldn’t possibly have been filmed during the time period it was set. Call this the Ignorance Singularity - a time in the future was the periods of the present collapse on themselves in the popular consciousness.

It’s not that far fetched of a concept to think of given current popular conception of periods of time. In the future there will likely be a growth in the field of technohistory, i.e. people who specialize in the history of various technological innovations. Most people will only know about recent technological history, say 50 or so years, while the educated may have a couple hundred years of historical knowledge mixed in with a smattering of important innovations such as the camera or the personal computer. Only people that specialize in certain time periods or certain types of technology will know the intricacies of innovations such as the personal computer being developed twenty years (or so) before the internet. Given the exponential growth in computing (Moores Law) the knowledge base may be even slimmer.

I’d venture to say there are plenty of historical examples of this already occurring. Take photography for instance. 100 years ago most people would know that it would be historically impossible to have a film print before 1884 or so (when it was developed). However as film technology continued to develop the nuances of different process advancements in the 19th century became unknown to the average person. Eventually major differences become unknown and people just group old photographs together as old looking. So most people wouldn’t know that a Daguerreotype was developed at a different time than early looking film.

We can not currently say where the future will see our technology as we are unaware of future technological development. But as time moves (forward?) the common knowledge of the past will continually diminish creating a perverse and anachronistic view. I just wonder if someday someone will see a picture of me next to a car and wonder why I just didn’t take my hovercraft.

I missed the republican debates last night but apparently Huckabee stealing a line from McCain (or Colbert) said that the Iranian sailors “be prepared that the next thing you will see will be the gates of hell” This saddens me in part because I missed them when they are at the MET, but at least some people in politics still believe that sharing culture is a way to improve diplomatic relations. I wrote this up this summer and have decided to post it considering the movie it’s about is coming out on DVD now.

I had the opportunity to see the film Superbad in previews a few weeks before it came out in theaters. It follows a relatively well-trodden narrative in the genre of teen comedies; a group of guys attempt to have loose their virginity before finishing high school and in the process encounter humorous obstacles. To its credit it is one of the funniest of the genre in recent memory in my opinion, finding it’s greatest comedic moments from the interaction of the two main protagonists, Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera). While many have claimed, and probably correctly, that this is the raunchiest of this genre to date few have examined that actual nature of this raunchiness. The film begins with a conversation between Seth and Even. Seth is discussing what Internet porn site he wants to subscribe to for the upcoming year. Spewing forth descriptions of the various features of one (including the numerous fetish sites it includes) and stating to his judgmental friend “Don’t make me feel weird for liking porn. Your the weird one for liking porn, I’m normal as shit.”

Shauna Swartz’s article on humilitainment from Bitch Magazine (link provided from online republication) was one of the first to address the genre of reality porn. In it she mentions one of the first of such sites, and the current proprietor of numerous other variations on the original theme Bang Bus. The site Bang Bus is quite similar to that of the fictional Vagtastic Voyage found in Superbad, introduced by Seth in the beginning of the film when discussing which site he wants to subscribe to. Seth explains “It’s where they pick up these random girls off the street, and they invite them into a van, and then they bang them once they’re on the van.” The actual Bang Bus, founded in 2000, by Kristopher Hinson and Penn Davis is pretty similar to it’s fictional counter-part. As described by the Miami New Times in a 2004 article.

The Bangbus formula is simple. As the bus — really, a white rental van — drives all over the Miami area, Greg Entner, who “performs” under the name Dirty Sanchez, acts as an antagonistic host and narrator who offers money to supposedly unwitting women in exchange for sexual favors. This is all smoke and mirrors, though. Usually, the people having sex are rookie couples or professional models. Once the women are “convinced” to get inside the van, the action starts, but it’s not a pool table quickie approach. The actual sex doesn’t come until the last ten minutes of the film. The majority of the time is spent suspending disbelief by capitalizing on the assumption that women will do anything for a few dollars.

The majority of the segments, which range from 30-60 minutes, are not spent depicting sex but rather berating and belittling the women. In the story the Miami New Times the girl whose story they followed (who had never appeared naked before a camera before and signed up because she needed money for an abortion) berated told to bark like a dog and squeal like a pig while fellating her boyfriend in front of several other men. A short clip of The Vagtastic Voyage, which is shown in a buddy montage of the main characters in Superbad, shows two women in bikinis (played by actual pornographic actresses) smiling and high fiving. In a blog post one of the actresses, Aurora Snow, mentioned her role as BangBus Girl (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=280057&blogID=169779933), the allusion to which is obvious and intentional.

What is mildly disturbing about all of this is the mainstreaming in comedy of incredibly misogynistic pornography. In fact more time in the genre of reality porn is spent belittling, berating, and humiliating women than is actually spent having sex. Some sites include the aforementioned Bang Bus and other similar incarnations in which women are “tricked” into having sex. These include sites where the scenario is one in which women basically lose their ability to refuse to consent to sex, like one mentioned in the Bitch article in which women are put in the trunks of a car. Other’s play on race and class issues, including one site called Euro Bride Tryout in which the women have sex in exchange for citizenship. Some sites use a story-line perhaps real or false post sex video’s of ex-grilfriends to get revenge on them. Other reality sites depict girls that are drunk have sex purportedly because they are intoxicated such as Easy Drunk Girls - Which may bring to mind several parts of Superbad.

However I do not think Superbad to a greater extent is at fault for this, but rather is capitalizing on a pre-existing popularized form of pornography (like the other Apatow helmed summer hit Knocked Up did with Mr. Skin). What is problematic on a more fundamental level is that whole generations of men are arriving at adolescence with a whole plethora of just plain angry depictions of women as sex object. In fact, a central theme found in this film is the role of loosing ones virginity as a hallmark of male maturation and the joy of the friendship between the two male leads in their womanless world. Underlying this is the general cruelty of the contemporary portrayal of a “mature” masculinity these boys aspire towards. The depictions and representations in these pornographic tableaux is not problematic because of the sex it depicts, although what where once aberrant or fetishist behaviors are as always becoming normalized, but rather the treatment of women and the sex act in general.

Pornography has never been noted for it’s romance nor need it be. There is nothing inherently, and in many cases overtly, wrong with pornography. It can play a very positive role in the sex lives of individuals, couples and even the culture at large. However, the rise and popularity of humilitainment seems to not only be harmful for women but men as well. The men in such videos don’t even seem to enjoy the sex, but rather the recordation of the act of conquest and degradation of women. While power dynamics often play out in sexual fantasies, the fantasies these films show are primarily if not solely about power. It presents sexuality as something that is only pleasurable for men its subjugation of women. Orgasms themselves don’t even seem to be enjoyable but rather a sport in which to blind, choke, cover, or make targets of women. Numerous sites are additionally devoted to this activities with a focus on humiliation of the women. Oddly enough the conception of internal ejaculation has, in the world of pornography, become a fetish.

These are the models that adolescent boys are growing up with, a masculinity that renders sexuality as both cruel and unpleasurable. This is the comedic well from which Superbad has drawn.
