My lovely and talented girlfriend, Elisabeth, dragged me and my camera to the Harry and The Potters show (their huge one in Harvard Square) so that I could take pictures of the performance while she assisted with research on the book. She is also, rightfully, thanked by Melissa for her hard work and excellent reporting on the world of Wizard Rock. It’s very exciting to be in a book and I have her to thank.

I recently invented what I shall call “The Hold Steady Drinking Game” although in reality it doesn’t actually require alcohol to be fun. The idea came about while I was walking around Montreal with Elisabeth and Abby and was challenged to make up a Hold Steady song on the spot. I thought about it for a while and realized there are several basic rules, that if you follow, you can create a pretty Craig Finn sounding narrative. Utilizing these rules, and some bonus ones, I figured out a game in which the players pick from various piles of paper and have to use their material to improv a Hold Steady song. Like a said does not require drinking, but it sure could help.

So Everyone takes a bunch of scraps of paper and writes down on each 1) a second tier american city (not NY, LA, etc….) 2) A character nickname which is based on or contains at least one noun (Freddy Knuckles) 3) A drug 4) A line to be repeated twice 5) a biblical reference or saint’s name.

 Then you make five piles and each person grabs one from each pile and goes at it.  If you have someone that can play a Springsteinian Riff on repeat all the better.  Then at the end everyone votes on their favorite.  Here’s a simulation of one (in which I will stack the deck, but base it on my aforementioned Montreal one).  Let’s say I pulled 1) Detroit 2) The Chipper, 3) Angel Dust, 4) This is the part of the song where I repeat myself 5) Christians being thrown to the lions.

I was watching an amazingly bad B movie the other night on Hulu entitled At The Earths Core. Hulu is an excellent resource for both good television and the most random selection of movies since Night Flight. The premise is pretty much implied by the title. Two Victorian Era scientists make a big drill and travel to the center of the earth where they discover a primitive civilization ruled by rejects from the planet of the Apes. Also there are giant bird/dinosaur hybrid creatures left over from some Godzilla movie and inserted with truly awful blue screen. I think they might have telepathy and consort with the apeish men. The film starred the fine thespian Doug McClure, one of the namesakes of the Simpson’s Troy McClure. The special effects, especially the poor blue screen and costumes, made me think the film was from the late 50s or 60s. I was amazed to find it was filmed in 1976. This misperception of ten to fifteen years is not that out of the ordinary given the relative slow progression amongst low budget movies (which only recently look different as a result of widespread and cheaper computer technology). But it got me thinking, at some point in the future someone will mistakenly see this movie and out of ignorance think “Hey, was this filmed during the Victorian times.” And then in a historically short period of time after that many people may make the same mistake, until only experts know that the film couldn’t possibly have been filmed during the time period it was set. Call this the Ignorance Singularity - a time in the future was the periods of the present collapse on themselves in the popular consciousness.

It’s not that far fetched of a concept to think of given current popular conception of periods of time. In the future there will likely be a growth in the field of technohistory, i.e. people who specialize in the history of various technological innovations. Most people will only know about recent technological history, say 50 or so years, while the educated may have a couple hundred years of historical knowledge mixed in with a smattering of important innovations such as the camera or the personal computer. Only people that specialize in certain time periods or certain types of technology will know the intricacies of innovations such as the personal computer being developed twenty years (or so) before the internet. Given the exponential growth in computing (Moores Law) the knowledge base may be even slimmer.

I’d venture to say there are plenty of historical examples of this already occurring. Take photography for instance. 100 years ago most people would know that it would be historically impossible to have a film print before 1884 or so (when it was developed). However as film technology continued to develop the nuances of different process advancements in the 19th century became unknown to the average person. Eventually major differences become unknown and people just group old photographs together as old looking. So most people wouldn’t know that a Daguerreotype was developed at a different time than early looking film.

We can not currently say where the future will see our technology as we are unaware of future technological development. But as time moves (forward?) the common knowledge of the past will continually diminish creating a perverse and anachronistic view. I just wonder if someday someone will see a picture of me next to a car and wonder why I just didn’t take my hovercraft.

This past December my band, the MEMES, had our first (and so far only) show. I had my friend Anna tape it so I could put it up on the internet, where all good memes go to live and die. I missed the republican debates last night but apparently Huckabee stealing a line from McCain (or Colbert) said that the Iranian sailors “be prepared that the next thing you will see will be the gates of hell” This saddens me in part because I missed them when they are at the MET, but at least some people in politics still believe that sharing culture is a way to improve diplomatic relations.
